Regarding Cloughaneely Angling Club, I have to agree with fly fisher who is unhappy with the mess that is the local angling club. I read Mr Connaghan's reply and failed to identify a single constructive decision or action that the club have taken. I know for a fact that this club has turned a blind eye to poaching and rampant foul hooking in both the Ray and more especially the Tullaghabegly rivers. Not only have they turned a blind eye to it but club members have been guilty of most of the foul hooking. The fact that the rivers are open this year for catch and release fishing will benefit the rivers. However while under the control of these lazy nodding donkeys God knows what the future holds.

An Cosan Glas / Walk the plank - Loinnir - Magheroarty Beach Free

An Cosán Glas collaborating this year with guest visual arts company Walk The Plank (UK) create an outdoor night time exhibition that will include large scale illuminated sculpture, projected images and music. The spectacular surrounding landscape of mountains together with miles of beaches, sand dunes and sea make for an inspiring and dramatic open air gallery. In their work, nine professional artists will explore the elements of water, wind, fire, and light combined with video, colour and live music to create a night-time adventure.
I mbliana, beidh ealaíontóirí An Cosán Glas ag obair le compántas piriteicnic Walk The Plank , as cathair Manchester, chun lorg nua a chur le chéile a ndéanfaidh meabhrú ar na heilimintí nádúrtha – tine, uisce, aer is talamh – agus ar Imeacht na nIarlaí.

Ards Forest / Ards Friary

Ireland’s most diverse forest park is also the only one with a sandy beach. The sublime Sheephaven Bay is part of Ards Forest Park, a 480-hectare paradise of forests, lakes, rivers and saltmarshes. These different habitats are home to an impressive array of wildlife.
Look out for field mice, red squirrels, badgers and stoats. Plant lovers should head for the western end of Lough Lilly where a blanket of white and yellow water lilies awaits them.
Facilities include forest trails, picnic areas and a children’s play area.
In the summertime is the coffeeshop "woodforest" open.
You can find it on the parkingplace.

Bridge of Sorrows

Bridge of Sorrows, Falcarragh, Co. Donegal
Bridge of Sorrows, Bridge of Tears, Stone commemorating the Irish Diaspora in North West Donegal
Nearly every person who left this part of Donegal during the Irish Diaspora passed over The Bridge of Sorrows. This small stone bridge is nestled in the Derryveagh Mountains on the west side of Muckish Mountain.

During the Irish Diaspora thousands of people passed this way on their way to Derry port in search of a better life in Australia, America and beyond. Many who bid farewell to their friends and relatives on this bridge would also eventually leave from this very spot a year or two later.

The name, The Bridge of Sorrows, has come down through oral Irish folklore. In the local Falcarragh area it is known as The Crying Bridge. In Irish the name is Droichead Chaointe (Droichead meaning a bridge and Chaon, to cry) or Droichead na ndeor (na ndeor meaning, the tears).

The Bridge of Sorrows, is a more recent translation for this bridge which lies on the main road from Falcarragh to Kilmacrenan and Letterkenny. There is parking space for people wanting to climb Muckish Mountain near the bridge.

I just found your website and think it's wonderful. I was born in
Ballyness many moons ago and emigrated to the U.S. with my family - mother, sister, and two brothers in 1949. My father went to the States in 1947.
I returned to Falcarragh for the first time in 1966 and again in 1977, 1979 and every year since beginning in 1997.

Over the years I have made many new friends among the 'Hills of Donegal'. I enjoyed the Falcarragh Band when it entertained so many at the Irish Center in
Philadelphia. We were so very proud of your talented band members.

I enjoyed reading the comments posted and hope that you will continue to
provide this wonderful opportunity to stay in touch with our heritage.

Slan,

Bridie (Havertown, Pennsylvania)

Bright Colours Only - one woman play.

Bright Colours Only - one woman play.

Written, directed and performed by Pauline Goldsmith

Aras Begley Falcarragh 12/8 euro.

A sell-out success of 2002 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Bright Colours Only is a unique one-woman show that celebrates the Irish wakehouse tradition that is still very much part of life and death, especially in Donegal. Before the makers of The Sopranos and Six Feet Under decided that death was a saleable commodity, Pauline Goldsmith was polishing the nameplate on her coffin, ironing her shroud and promoting the importance of embalming to anyone that would listen! It is an uplifting interactive experience that takes place in a virtual living room, with hilarious and harrowing memories from a Belfast childhood - during which the audience is invited to partake of tea, sandwiches and a wee dram, as is the custom.

Duration 1 hour approx. Suitable for all ages.

I am attempting to trace my Irish Heritage. I've just found that my Great, Great Grandfather immigrated from Falcarragh via Londonderry on the ship "Mary Ann" at the age of 23 in the year 1854, destined for St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. His name was Henry Adams and his father's name was Henry Adams. This is all I know. If there are any Adams' that still remain in Falcarragh I would love to "chat" with you and if anyone has any information that would be helpful, I would be most appreciative.

I am in the USA.

Thank you.

Dun Lewey Centre,/ Ionad Cios Locha

DÚN LÚICHE is a small rural community in the Donegal Gaeltacht, lies in unique scenery at the foot of Mount Errigal, the highest mountain in the County.

Ionad Cois Locha is situated on the shores of Dunlewey Lough in the shadow of the haunting and mysterious Poison Glen.

Welcome, step back in time to the homestead of a famous weaver, hear local tales on our boat trip. Visit our cafe and craft shop.

The weavers cottage:
In the middle of the century many people came to this homestead to visit Manus Ferry, renowned weaver, and to purchase his tweed. These included Henry McIllhiney, Glenveigh Castle, Derek Hill, Glebe House, Sir Sidney Nolan, the famous Australian artist and many others too numerous to mention.

With his craft and using the wool provided by his brother's sheep that grazed the surrounding mountains, the family overcame the hardships that faced most families in the valley. The famed weaver and shepherd lived with their sister who ran the shop and kept house.

Manus's home has been preserved to give the visitor the full flavour of life in Donegal in the middle of the last century.

Falcarragh Glee Club

Falcarragh Glee Club

Falcarragh Glee Club Returns by Popular Demand

Calling all musicians, singers, actors/actresses, dancers or those who just wanna have fun ….....Falcarragh Glee Club is back by popular demand! Building on the resounding success of last year, this year’s Glee Club co-ordinated by youth worker Laura Barrett and music teacher Con McFadden promises to be bigger and better. One way Con and Laura decided to do this was to incorporate the expertise of local drama facilitator Paul Bonar.
‘Paul brings with him lots of experience in performing arts having recently graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a Bachelor of Arts in Drama and Film . He has already worked closely with transition year students in PCC and started his own drama group in the community. Paul says ‘ I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with this very talented Glee group in a drama capacity, it promises to be a lot of fun for all involved’.
Drawing from feedback from the young people, we found that they were enthusiastic about performing parts of well-known musicals. Knowing Paul, we are sure to see a unique take on our best loved musicals!! Over the course of the eight week summer programme, one hour workshops will be held in singing, dancing and drama. Glee Club members will learn songs under the direction of music teacher Con McFadden with choreography by award winning performer Maighread Grace Curran.
‘I am very excited about being part of this year’s Glee Club! I've seen them perform on many occasions and have been blown away by their talent. I am hoping that I will be able to add even more talent to the mix by getting them dancing. I look forward to working with the different age groups and hope to choreograph routines for the Glee Club which will add to their overall performance’.
Together the Glee Club facilitators will work with the young people towards a showcase finale to be held at the end of the summer and going by the reaction of last year’s shows, promises to be a showcase not to be missed. ‘After watching the DVD from last year’s finale concerts, I realised the Glee Club is great for the young people of the community to get involved and I could see the members build friendships and have more confidence in performing especially after their wonderful concerts to close last year’s Glee Club!’ said Laura.
So any young people in the area that are looking for an opportunity to showcase their talent or just want to have fun with friends, registration will take place on Saturday 25th June at 2pm in the YARD, Falcarragh. It will be €5 to register and the club is open to boys and girls between the ages of 10-21. For more information, please contact the YARD on 074 9180112 or by email falcarraghglee@gmail.com. You can also find the falcarraghgleeclub on facebook to keep update on their progress!

Falcarragh Visitors Centre / An tSean Bheairic

At this Donegal visitor resource centre, you can immerse yourself in the lives of our rural ancestors from Falcarragh and its surrounding region.

This authentic two-storey building was originally constructed in 1890 as the Falcarragh Police Barracks, and hence is known as 'An tSean Bheairic' in Irish which translates to 'The Old Barracks'. It was used as such until 1920 when it became the Falcarragh Garda Station. Permanent exhibits of the history and culture of the Barracks are displayed within the visitor centre, which adds to the uniqueness and authenticity of the centre.

Fíbín present Gael-Gore

at Arás Begley, Falcarragh
15 euro/12 euro

Fíbín join the festival for the first time with a brand new dark, blood and guts show. The puppets follow the lives of three girls as they embark on a journey to the Gaeltacht to learn Irish. Three different girls - three very different endings.

Fíbín productions make the Irish language accessible to everyone by using an innovative combination of drama and puppetry together on the one stage. The end result is a highly visual style of presentation which transcends all language boundaries!

Suitable for both older children (14 years+) and adults

Good to see the site being used on an ongoing basis.
It was interesting to read the Boland reference.I do recall
in younger days having a job as relief postman during holiday periods. One route was to the Dunmore area.Often a letter would have to be delivered to Hannah Boland. This most
pleasant and friendly person always insisted on a cup of tea and scon bread, how refreshing this was after the long uphill cycle. This was a welcoming house.

Ta muid sa bhaile i ndiaidh deireadh seachtaine iontach againn,ta muid buiocach don choiste ar an obair deanta.
This was a wonderful weekend, the photographic exhibition created a great buzz, the debate and the reminesence in the sean bheric was hillarious.we could relate so much to Fr. Quinn on Sunday. We would get a clip in the ear if we broke the crockery jug that he did.It was great to meet so many old friends in Arus Begley for the cup of tea.
On the street the banter and the fun was mighty.Again the
priest led the show on his bike,it reminded me of a parish priest in the early forties,a Fr Cunningham who came to Falcarragh on a bike from Gortahork on some sunday evenings.
We would meet up with him as children,he gave us two shillings to buy sweets, they were bought in Owen Mc Nultys,he caused many a row when it came to the dividing.
FR.Quinn did not give me anything.
The dinner was an opportunity to really let the hair down.
A wonderful weekend. Thanks to John and Hannah for the hospitality.

Kathleen,Fr.Quinn gave a lovely sermon at the reunion mass
on Sunday,he refeered to a shop at his home in his younger days when he broke a crockery jug while filling oil for a shopper. He was scolded for this. You would want to hear the full sermon to value it.
Great to read comments from people so far away.
If you remember Paul our son,he sends his regards. He met
your mother at the gallary and was delighted to talk to her as we all were.

Comhghairdeas on the new update of the website. It is nice to see good use being made of it and so much emerging that jog
the memories for those of us who are away for years.
Very interested in the Christchurch, New Zealand connection. My wife Kathleen and I have been there on several occasions,
had a wonderful time visiting her relations. On our last visit brother John and his wife Hannah were with us and enjoyed the tours on North and South Island a country really worth visiting.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks to John Conaghan on his informative account of the rivers in the area.It does appear a sensible approach.
The talk about these local rivers brings back lovely memories of times spent around the Bawan pool in our younger days watching the skills of those anglers.
The cistenna on the website asks how many of the 1939 football team can be named.A further question could be added to that,How many of these anglers of the 1940 and 1950 period can be named.Johns father could be amongst them.
A further compliment to John for his contributions to BAR SCELTA every monday.
Note a change in my email address following a hijack of my old one.
Looking forward to the reunion.

shame on cloughaneely angling club who are selling membership for fishing to anglers when rivers are closed. very little work being done to the rivers by caa, and yet they take membership monies. havent even the decency to set up a trout fisherie for the locals, where has the money gone from the past when rivers were fishing well. maybe 15 stiles put up on the bawhan river last year, this is the great job the club is doing. it must be at least 16 years since the stiles were done since the fisheries board done a few last year. you guys couldnt run a bath never mind a fishing club. do the anglers a favour and step down and let someone who cares run the club

Glenveagh National Park

Glenveagh National Park is one of six national parks in Ireland. Situated in the Northwest of Co. Donegal, Glenveagh encompasses some 16,000 acres in the heart of the Derryveagh Mountains. Such a great wilderness is the haunt of many interesting plants and animals. These lands were managed as a private deer forest before becoming a national park in 1975. With the completion of public facilities Glenveagh National Park was officially opened to the public in 1986.

“A National Park exists to conserve interesting plant and animal communities and associated landscapes in their natural state and, under conditions compatible with that purpose, to provide for appreciation of them by the visiting public.”
Glenveagh National Park is open all year round. Castle, Visitor Centre and Gardens open every day apart from Good Friday and the Christmas period.

Visitor Center
The Glenveagh Visitor Centre is located on the northern end of Lough Veagh, near the edge of the National Park. Its award-winning design incorporates a living heather roof mimicking the surrounding landscape causing minimum disturbance. The extensive displays contained within provide an introduction to the parks natural and built history as well as providing information on walking trails, events etc. Guides on duty will also be happy to provide visitors with information about the park and surrounding area as well as tickets for the park buses.

Glenveagh Castle
Glenveagh Castle is a 19th century castellated mansion and was built between 1867 and 1873. Its construction in a remote mountain setting was inspired by the Victorian idyll of a romantic highland retreat.
It was designed by John Townsend Trench, a cousin of its builder and first owner, John George Adair, with whom he had been raised in Co. Laois. The designer appears to have imitated the style of earlier Irish Tower-houses adding an air of antiquity to the castle. The building stone chose was granite, plentiful in Donegal but difficult to work and allowing for little detail.

The forbidding architecture of the castle is quickly forgotten amidst the varied comforts within. Henry McIlhenny, the last owner of the castle, served the Philadelphia Museum of Art as Curator of Decorative Arts and his expertise in this field is evident throughout the castle. Through time, each room acquired a different character, some roughly in keeping with the period of the house, others freely inventive.

Few of the great houses of Ireland are preserved in this condition, with their original furnishings, and in Glenveagh Castle one catches a glimpse of a lifestyle belonging to an earlier age.

Access to the castle is by guided tour which last approx. 30 mins

Getting Here
Glenveagh National Park is located 24km north-west of Letterkenny and can be reached via the villages of Kilmacrennan or Churchill.

Access from Letterkenny is by the (N56) road through Kilmacrennan, turning left on to the Gweedore road (R255), or alternatively via Church Hill, and past Gartan and Akibbon lakes (R251). This route passes close to both Newmills and the Glebe Gallery.

HMS Wasp

Of the many ships wrecked off the Cloughaneely coast, probably the most celebrated was de "HMS Wasp". This Royal Navy gunboat was wrecked in mysterious circumstances,on the night of 23 september, 1884, when en route to Tory to collect rent and rates, wich the islanders refused to pay.
All but six of a crew of fifty were drowned.
Many people still believe that the islanders caused the boat to sink, by turning the Cursing stone of Tory (Cloch Thoraí) to invoke a curse on the "Wasp".
Others believe that the light in the lighthouse, built in 1832, was put out, in order to lure the frigate onto the rocks.
The islanders denied both claims. A monument was erected in the churchyard of St. Ann's, Church of Ireland Church, Killult, where some of the sailors are buried.
The rock on which the Wasp ran aground, is now known as "Feadán an Wasp". The Andora Star; Rose of Ipswich; Stolwick; and California, were also wrecked on the Cloughaneely coast

Horn Head / Corrán Binne

Horn Head (Irish: Corrán Binne, meaning "Hollow in the Hills") is a peninsula in Donegal, North West Ireland, close to Dunfanaghy. It forms part of Sheephaven Bay.

Horn Head has many remains of Neolithic stone circles, court tombs, passage tombs and prehistoric field boundaries.

Horn Head cliffs rise straight out of the water to a height of about 600ft/180m on the ocean side of the peninsula. They are an internationally important colony for breeding seabirds. Species include the European Shag and the Razorbill. It is designated as an Irish Natural Heritage Area and as a Refuge for Fauna specifically sea birds. Horn Head cliffs are also designated a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation by the Irish government.

McSwyne's gun is a blow hole on the West side of the peninsula. Previously, during storms, water could be forced through it to a height of 200-300 feet, with a noise that could be heard ten miles away. Although still functional, it is not as spectacular any more. Several people have been killed after getting too close and falling in.

Horn Head has remains of two lookout towers, one from Napoleonic times and one from World War II. Both give views of the Atlantic Ocean and Tory Island

Iascaireachta / Fishing

Falcarragh is located on the Atlantic coast and there are plenty of opportunities for sea angling and fishing in the rivers.
Fishing in Falcarragh:
  • Game Fishing
  • Angling Tullaghabegley River
  • Ray River
  • Lackagh River

  • Cloughaneely Angling Association

  • The Cloughaneely Anling Association was formed in the late 1940's to protect and develop angling on the waters in the parish. The members have been continuously active since then and have undertaken many projects over the years to try to improve angling facilities in the district.
  • The Association now run the angling in the two catchment areas of the Ray and Tullaghobegley rivers as partners with the Northern Regional Fisheries Board anf the IFI.
  • The river closures of recent years have been a big set-back to their efforts. The closures on the two local rivers, in common with many other rivers nationally, were brought about by a serious drop in salmon and sea-trout numbers returning to spawn. The drop was so pronounced that it was accepted that the numbers of fish returning to spawn was not high enough to maintain the already low stock of breeding fish in the river systems and that salmon were in danger of becoming extinct in these rivers.
  • While many reasons can be given for the decline in fish numbers in the recent past, the end result is that both the Ray and Tullaghobegley rivers have been closed to angling for the last three seasons. The net fishery on Ballyness Bay has also been closed.
  • Unfortunately, while the aim of the closures was praiseworthy, the necessary infrastruction and resources were not put in place to guarantee the success of the project. The absence of anglers on the rivers and the drastic reduction of Fishery protection staff numbers in the last two years has resulted in a big increase in poaching on all rivers in the county, not just in our area. Added to this is the increasing number of seals and cormorants in the estuaries. These are thriving on their diet of scarce salmon and sea-trout as they return to the rivers to spawn. There is a serious lack of joined-up thinking involved in this whole area. There seems little point in spending thousands in buying out netsmen along the coast and closing down angling on the rivers in the name of conservation and at the same time giving a free hand to poachers, seals and cormorants to drive the stocks that are supposed to be protected into extinction.
  • A valuable asset is quickly being lost. Apart from the social and recreational benefits locally, the revenue from angling tourism that was quite significant to the Falcarragh area in the past has disappeared. At government level nobody has yet woken up to the fact that substantial revenue could be gained annually from promoting angling tourism as a local and nationwide industry. It cannot be promoted with cut-backs.
  • The Cloughaneely Angling Association are hoping to get a program of bank clearance underway this Autumn in preparation of a possible re-opening of some of the fisheries next spring. The aim would be to provide stiles and footwalks along the river bank to give free access to anglers and walkers. This would be in the hope of getting some of the rivers open in some capacity for the 2011 season. It must be said however that this is an aspiration rather than a promise and is dependent on what figures are received from Department Staff for salmon returns in the autumn.
  • Angling clubs by the very nature want to have their members out enjoying the fishing on their waters. It has been a very frustrating few years for those interested in promoting their local rivers We would like to thank all our members who have given their support in the last few years when rivers were closed. We would hope that there are better day ahead.

  • If the rivers are to be re-opened in any capacity the Association will be glad to notify all interested parties when the time comes

Joe and Anne Kane's Pottery and Tea room

This is a fabulous place to go and look at the fantastic ceramic wall hangings that Joe now makes and the jewellery that Anne makes. The Kanes live in the most beautiful old rectory house at Moyra, near Falcarragh. Their studio, shop and tea room are in the downstairs section of the house. It is so relaxing to sit in the tea room and sip tea, coffee and eat the most delicious cakes and pies. On a cold day there is a log fire blazing which adds to the atmosphere. I love this place.

In reply to the previous comment from Lila re the local rivers being closed I would like to let you know about some of the activities of our local Cloughaneely Angling Association. Although you may not currently be a member of the Association, we thought you might be interested to hear about some of our work.

CAA, in partnership with the Northern Regional Fisheries Board, manages the fishing on the Ray and Tullaghobegley rivers for the benefit of local anglers and visiting anglers. We have access to the resources of the Board for information, technical and practical support. One example of this is the work currently being carried out on the Tullaghobegley river to improve access – clearing banks and installing stiles where needed. The intention is to then do the same on the Ray, before moving on to implement the rest of a comprehensive work programme which the Committee has discussed in detail with the Board and which is aimed at enhancing the quality of angling for members and visitors alike.

Every year for thousands of years, salmon and sea trout have been coming in from the sea and moving up our rivers to spawn. This precious natural resource is part of our heritage; it is reflected in songs and stories that go back to the dawn of our history. Sadly, in recent times and for a variety of reasons, the stocks of these wonderful creatures have become dangerously low. As part of a major effort to turn this around, many rivers have been closed temporarily to fishing until stocks reach safe and sustainable levels again. It is frustrating for all of us anglers that the rivers are closed, but we recognise and accept that this is for the long term good of rivers and anglers alike. Now, an important point in relation to that: although the Ministerial Order closing various rivers technically allows for fishing for sea trout under 40 cms, the Association decided, in the interests of restoring the rivers to healthy stock levels as quickly as possible, to close them to ALL fishing. The Association can do this as we are the managers of the fishery and, as such, have the authority and responsibility to decide whether and when angling on the fishery should be allowed. We ask everyone to respect this decision and to support the Association in its efforts to see the rivers brought back to health as soon as possible.

It is not so long ago that the local fishery was not only a source of great enjoyment for us local anglers but also an important contributor to the the local economy through the many angling tourists attracted by what it had to offer. These visitors stayed in local accomodation, frequented local businesses and brought a welcome and much needed income to the area. It is our hope and aim that our efforts together with you may see that valuable contribution restored. If we are successful in our efforts to restore the fishery, our whole community will benefit.

We hope that this is of interest to you. If you would like to have any further information about the Association and its activities, we will be pleased to provide it on request.

John Connaghan, Chairman, CAA

To answer a query by Lynn Boland Richardson...there are Meenderry School records available. They are in storage in St Finians NS in Falcarragh. Permission to view can be sought from the Principal, although they may not be removed from the premises.
I don't know if you are aware that there has been a committee set up to work towards a school re-union?

Great site, I was looking for information about old Ray church and am wondering where exactly the burial place is of the congregation who were slaughtered in the Cromwellian massacre. I've visited the ruins on several occasions and I can find nothing to indicate where it is...wondering why there is no information available on site about the history of the place. Anyone have any ideas?

The spectacular surrounding landscape of Magheraroarty near Gortahork with its stunning beach, sand dunes and mountain views will once again form the backdrop for the dramatic open-air exhibition of illuminated sculpture, film and music. Twelve artists along with local children will present newly created large-scale sculptures, which will light up and come alive as daylight fades and the night descends. The night-time trail induces a beguiling, enthralling and magical atmosphere. The location becomes dreamlike, as the sounds of music harmonising with the sculptures and the unique setting engender a sense of wonder and enchantment for all the family. Please note: Trail distance: 3.5km, access via Magheraroarty Pier Road with parking available at pier (Please follow signs). Limited disabled parking also available beside trail. My grandfather joseph Boland and his siblings Cormack and hannah all went to Meenderry school. They walked up across the hill in front of their home in Meencarricka or upper dunmore as it is known now.
they would have been there when the school first opened in 1908 or 09.
Do you have the early school records..the register for that time period?

Mar pháirt den deireadh seachtaine ‘An Fálcarrach le Chéile’ bhí seisiún bríomhar diospóireachta ina ndéarnadh plé ar féidireachtaí an cheantair.
Tháinig a lán smaoine chun tosaigh a thiocfaí dhul chun tairbhe don cheantar ó thaobh saol sóisíalta, cultúrtha, turasóireachta agus tionsclaíochta de.
Táimid ag tabhairt cuireadh anois do chlubanna / eagraiochtaí / lucht gnó an cheantair theacht chuig cruinni chun cur leis an mbunchloch seo.

A lively and stimulating discussion took place as part of the Think Tank held during ‘An Fálcarrach Le Chéile’ weekend last June.

The discussion generated many ideas that, if followed through should be of benefit to the social, cultural, tourist and industrial development of the town and surrounding area.

We would like each club / association / group / interested party or individuals to send representative(s) to a follow up meeting to build on the foundations laid.

This meeting will take place in:

Hi there,
My name is Michael Ewacha, I'm from Vancouver, B.C., Canada. I was just wondering if anyone has any information on a Laurence Michael Hughes. He was born March 1st, 1886 in Falcarragh. His address is only stated as Ballyconnel. His father was Lawrence Hughes, and his mother was Catherine Tighe. He's my great grandfather, and i've been trying to find distant relatives, but have had no luck in doing so. I first thought he was born just outside Kellygordon and Ballybofey, but have recently discovered that he was in fact born in Falcarragh. I know it's a long shot, but thought that i'd give it a shot. Thanks, and great website!

Hi Everyone, I see nothing has been added to guestbook, since my last entry. There must be something that has happened lately in Falcarragh, worthy of a mention. Have all the eyesore buildings, debated in the reunion, some years back, been done up yet? My seventy something cousin Eileen, made her first trip to Ireland last month, along with her daughter Chris, and really enjoyed meeting some of the family, and the fuss that was made of her. This is all for now, as I do not want to be writing to a site, if it is not being used now.

Noreen(McFadden) Kilgannon kilgannon541@btinternet.com
Back home again. We really enjoyed the reunion weekend, and the glorious weather made it all the more enjoyable! The opening night was great, and enjoyed all the people that I met. It was lovely meeting up with old school friends, female and male, and recalling old times. The parades were lovely and,got some great photographs of the children in their uniforms looking so proud.
The Dinner Dance was very good also, and we shared our table with the Sweeney family, Mrs McAuliffe, Greta. Maurice and his wife.Had some lovely chats.
The band was brilliant, and enjoyed watching everyone out dancing and enjoying themselves! We left when the Disco started, as my poor eardrums cannot cope with loud sounds anymore - My three Sons finished them off years ago, having to listen to three types of music blaring around the house, simultaneously!
Our Holiday continued to be good as we set off for Galway, on Monday afternoon. We gave Kathleen McCallion, a lift back to her home in Sligo, and we did not stop talking the whole way, it was lovely! Frank, thought there was something wrong with me, as he never heard me talk so much! Frank, surprised me, when he wanted to stop and see Biddy O`Barnes pub. After over thirty years of driving past it, now, he wanted to see it! The reason being, that at work when he says the wife is from Donegal, they ask him if he visited Biddy`s, and its a great source of embarrassment, when he has to admit, that he was never in it. Kathleen, was never in it either, so we enjoyed a very pleasant half hour there. Had some refreshments and the staff gave us some complimentary sandwiches. Took some photos, and set off once again.
After dropping Kathleen, off, we visited some more friens in Sligo. It was midnight when we reached Galway.
Frank, enjoyed his stay, and seeing his sister Bridie and her husband Bill, whom we often stayed with over the years , and enjoyed their hospitality!
Well, that is all for now, and hope that there is another reunion, in the near future! Well done, Mary, Seamus, Manus and Patrick! Best wishes, Noreen

Hello, just a quick note to say how much we are enjoying James Doohan, on Countdown - and wish him luck! We will miss the programme tomorrow, as we are heading off for the Reunion. It`s a lovely lead up to the reunion, which will also be a huge success - with all the hard work of the Committee over the past year.
Enjoyed John Connaghan`s piece about the rivers.
Best wishes, Noreen

Thank you Maire, for answering my question, and it is nice to know that there may be more interesting things happening in the future.

Thanks also to Seamus Doohan, for the DVD`s he got done for the reunion.I sent one to my cousin Eugene McFadden, who is doing the family tree, and is keen to learn what life was like in the area in the in his parents time. He enjoyed the DVD and John McCarry`s cd, and sends his thanks to John.I loaned the second DVD to family to enjoy. Must order another one!

Hello again,
What a shame, after all the excitement leading up to the Festival, that the Guestbook seems to have come to an end. No comments about whether the Festival, has made any difference to Falcarragh, improving it or otherwise!

Anyway, received John McCarry`s CD yesterday, and I think it is great, and love listening to it - and Frank, likes it too. Well done, John. Your cousin Nuala, had it stuck in her CD player within minutes of handing it to her.

Hope some more stories appear on the Guestbook, as it is nice to know what is going on. Best wishes, Noreen

Hello again! Well, the last twelve months have flown, and am still looking forward to Falcarragh Reunion, and please God, that we`ll make it. Have my tickets booked for the Dinner Dance - and Seamus Doohan, said the ticket sales are going well, so make sure to get yours in time!
Had a surprise yesterday, My "Little" brother Tony texted me to say The Falcarragh Committee, have invited him to open the festival - what an honour, and he is delighted!
Looking forward to seeing old school friends - Kathleen Sweeney, Gracie Sharkey and many more, I hope!
My husband Frank is from Galway, and after listening to me going on about the Reunion this past year, he is looking forward to it now himself.
Also looking forward to meeting Paddy & Madge O Grady, who were near neighbours of ours for years - and Paddy used to take us Newtown ones out for drives on a Sunday afternoon, up to Glenveagh and other places - a very generous man! Best wishes, Noreen

I am really looking forward to the Falcarragh Reunion, and hope to meet up with old friends - that is, if we can still recognize each other! Thank you to all who are involved with the reunion and making this day possible - the hard work will be worth it! Best wishes to all!

Ray Church / Teampall Ráithe

According to a local tradition, the first church at Ray was founded b y St. Fionan in the sixth century.
A Church survived there until the seventeenth century, when it was destroyed by a platoon of Cromwellian soldiers under the command of Captain Cunningham.
The soldiers burst open the door one Sunday morning, during Mass, and slaughtered the congregation.
This came to be known as The Massacre of Ray (Marfach Ráithe).
The dead are buried within two hundred meters of the church at a place called Resting Place of the Bones (Lag na gCnámh).
The church continued to be used by the Church of Ireland until the early 19th century.
Many members of the Olphert land-owning family of Ballyconnel are buried here.

St. Colmcille's Cross / Cros Cholm Cille

This large ringed cross, twenty feet in height and seven feet in width, stands against the north wall, inside the ruins of Ray Church.
The cross is said to have been sculpted from a solid rock quarried from Muckish Mountain, and was originally intended for Tory by St. Colmcille.
Colmcille, however presented it to St. Fionan for retrieving his misplaced Bible.
The cross was knocked down in a storm about 1750, and lay broken in the graveyard until it was repaired by the Office of Public Works in the 1970's.
Two broad metal strips were used to secure the cross in one piece, and it was re-erected inside the building.
At the base of the cross there are two millstones, one of which has been cut to form a cross base, and the other in which there is a cork screw perforation.
In the graveyard there is a basin stone, and in the North East corner of the graveyard a standing stone, which is approximateliy six feet high and three feet wide.

History of Falcarragh

Falcarragh is the main town of the parish known as Cloughaneely (Cloich Cheann Fhaola), a parish steeped in history. 'An Fálcarrach', is the main commercial town between Letterkenny and Dungloe was known in the past as both the 'Crossroads' and as 'Robinson’s Town'. An Fálcarrach, the official name, originally referred to a little hamlet at the foot of Falcarragh Hill, south east of the present town. Gradually houses were built at the crossroads, primarily for the workers and trades people employed on the nearby Olphert Estate in Ballyconnell.

The first recorded reference to 'Falcarragh' appears in a report written by the Protestant Bishop’s stewart in Raphoe in 1822. William Wilson was the stewart responsible for collection of tithes to support the Protestant clergy. He apparently received a hostile reception on arrival in Cloughaneely (parish) according to this account he gave to his bishop:

- According to my intention I went to Cloughineely and on Monday about 12 o’clock arrived at a place called Falcarrow in your Lordship’s See (about five miles distant from Dunfanaghy) where I then, pursuant to advertisement, proposed holding the Court as I twice before had, but was immediately on my arrival surrounded by upwards of 150 to 300 men who had assembled merely for the purpose of preventing me from holding any Court and threatened my life if I would. Their measures I was obliged to comply with. -

Slater’s Directory of 1870 provides some further information about Falcarragh and it’s surrounding area at the time.

- Crossroads or Falcarragh, is a village, in the parish of Tullaghbegley, and partly of Raymunterdoney, barony of Kilmacrennan, situated on the summit of a small hill near to the coast; opposite here is the Island of Torrey, nine miles distant. The places of worship are the parish church and a Presbyterian meetinghouse. A dispensary and a school are the charitable institutions. Fairs are held on the last Thursday monthly. Population in 1861 was 231. -

Slater’s Directory of 1881, records that the population increased to 258 inhabitants in 1871 and that there was a Protestant Episcopal Church in the town. We are also given some information about the local post office which was situated at the crossroads. Thomas Browne was Postmaster at the time and “letters from all parts arrive at ten minutes past eleven morning, and are dispatched at one afternoon.”

Filíocht agus Stair / Poetry and History

Tá scálaí na staire ag síneadh romhat. Balor agus Colm Cille; Gaeil agus Gaill; an Lágan agus Albain; díshealbhú agus imirce; droch am agus laetha óir – clocha doirlinge iad sin ar thrá Chloich Cheann Fhaola.

“The mist of the mountains and voice of the sea are ever near”.
So too are the shadows of the past. Pre-Celtic gods and early Christian saints; warring clans and Cromwellian soldiers, evictions and emigration, poverty and poetry are all threads woven in the tapestry which is the heritage of Cloich Cheann Fhaola. Here is the heart of Gaelic-speaking Donegal.

Balor agus Cloich Cheann Fhaola

Balor, the mythological king of Tory Island, was a Fomorian giant who was widely known as Balor na Súile Nimhe (Balor of the Evil Eye). He stole a highly prized cow, the Glas Gaibhleann from Mac Aneely a chieftain who lived on the mainland. Mac Aneely resolved to kill Balor. His druid told him that only his grandson could kill Balor. Balor, therefore, kept his daughter Eithne in prison in Tory. Mac Aneely, disguised as a lady, succeeded in getting into the prison and when Eithne saw him she immediately fell in love with him. When Mac Aneely returned to the mainland he left Eithne with child. She gave birth to three sons but when Balor found out he ordered them to be drowned. However, one son named Lugh survived, and was fostered by his uncle Gavida, the blacksmith.

Balor, outraged by Mac Aneely’s plans to kill him went to the mainland, seized Mac Aneely, lay him across a large white stone and beheaded him with one blow of his sword. A red stain, said to be Mac Aneely’s blood can be seen on the white stone known locally as Cloich Cheann Fhaola (The Stone of the Head of Mac Aneely). In 1774 Wybrant Olphert of Ballyconnell House raised the stone on a pillar 16ft high. Sometime after Mac Aneely’s death his son Lugh avenged him by thrusting a red spear through Balor’s evil eye. Lugh, who came to be known as the God of Light was commemorated on one of the postage stamps of Eire, “The Sword of Light.”

First Settlers in Cloughaneely

It is thought that when the first Mesolithic Hunters came from Scotland they settled firstly around the east coast of Antrim and the river Bann. They then paddled into Ballyness and Tramore Bays around 5000- 4000 BC. They were fishermen and women, hunters and gatherers and found this area ideal with it's abundance of fish, wild animals, nuts and berries.

They seem to have settled beside the sea and adapted well to the local environment. A number of Mesolithic implements have been discovered in the area - an early Mesolithic axe was found near Dunfanaghy, and Bann flakes, used as knives or for scraping flesh from hides, were found at Hornhead.

The Neolithic people were thought to be the first farmers and stone monument builders. They came to Ireland around 3500 BC and probably sailed from Britain or Brittany. Then making their way along the coast until they reached Ballyness Bay around 3000 BC. These early farmers were the first to leave a lasting mark on the Irish landscape. In many parts they built large 'megalithic' tombs, for their dead. There are still a number of these tombs in Cloughaneely today, a fine example being the Court Cairn, in Ballyboes (Cloughacorra). A court cairn usually had a room or rooms in which the cremated ashes of the dead were placed. The cairn was then covered by a mound of earth and stones with an open space in front where the ceremony would have taken place.

The descendants of the Court Cairn people built Dolmens or Portal Graves which only had one room or chamber. The roof of the chamber was a huge stone rested upon two large upright stones to the front and two smaller stones to the back. The corpse or cremated remains were placed in the chamber and the whole structure was then covered in soil. Two examples in the locality of Falcarragh are Dermot and Grainne’s bed in Ailt and the Dolmen at Errarooey Beg.
There is also a Wedge Tomb in Greenhills, which is locally known as Grainne’s Grave.

The Stone Age came to an end with the discovery of metals. Bronze was made by adding tin to copper and creating this harder metal. Tools fashioned from bronze were more efficient and longer lasting than copper or even stone. They were also easily shaped and sharpened.

The Bronze Age people did not bury their dead in megalithic tombs, instead they used a stone box. These graves are called Cist Graves. The only Cist grave found in the Falcarragh area was discovered in the Sandhills near Dunfanaghy in 1898 and contained two skulls, one of an elderly male and the other of a young adult female.

Few Bronze Age settlements have been found in Ireland but in Cloich Cheann Fhaola we have the remains of a Bronze Age cooking site called an Fulachta Fiadh. The Fulachta Fiadh was a rectangular pit lined with wooden planks which was then filled with water and a fire was lit beside it on which stones were heated. The heated stones were then put into the water and meat wrapped in straw was dropped into the water to cook. More stones were thought to be added in order to keep the water boiling. Archaeologists believe that this way of cooking continued until about 1000AD. There is an example of a Fulachta Fiadh at Errarooey More.

According to local tradition, the first church at Ray was founded by St. Fíonán in the sixth century. A church survived there until the seventeenth century when it was destroyed by a platoon of Cromwellian soldiers under the command of Captain Cunningham. The soldiers burst open the door during mass one Sunday morning and slaughtered the congregation. This came to be known as Marfach Raithe (The Massacre of Ray). The dead are buried within two hundred metres of the church at a place called Lag na gCnámh (Resting Place of the Bones).
The church continued to be used by the Church of Ireland until the early 19th century. Many members of the Olphert family (local landlords) are buried there.

Baile Chonaill (Ballyconnell House)

This large 18th century house stands in the heart of a wooded park of 500 acres, about a quarter of a mile from Falcarragh. It is the former residence of the Olpherts, a landowning family of Dutch extraction who first bought land in Cloughaneely in 1619.

Ballyconnell House was built around 1763. The Olphert motto “Dum Spiro Spero” (While I breathe, I hope) is still legible over the front door. The house was occupied by the Irish Republican Brotherhood in 1921 also the Free State Forces in 1922. The Olphert lands, 15,611 acres, were purchased by the Congested Districts Board in 1917 for £20,620 and the house and Estate by the Commissioners of Public Works in 1926 for £7,000.

The House and Estate were offered to the Loreto nuns and was opened as a preparatory college, Coláiste Bhríde, for young women who wanted to become primary school teachers in 1927. The Loreto nuns remained in Ballyconnell House until 1961.

In 1965 Ballyconnell House was bought by the Diocese of Raphoe and reopened as a boys’ secondary school. A new 3-storey dormitory wing was added and the building was used as a residence for boarding students until 1986.

In 1987 Udarás na Gaeltachta bought the estate.

This authentic two-storey building, located in the centre of Falcarragh, was originally constructed in 1890 as the Falcarragh Police Barracks. It was used as a barracks until 1920 when it became the Falcarragh Garda Station. Permanent exhibitions of its history and culture are displayed within it's visitors’ centre.

The Mass Rock / Leac na hAltóra

In the eighteenth century, a series of Penal Laws was enforced in Ireland, wich restricted the civil and religious liberties of roman Catholics.
Priest often had to celebrate Mass in Shelters (Scathláin), wich were frequently sited in places associated with Saints.
One such place was the Altar Stone (Leac na hAltóra), at Ballyboes.
It is reputed to be the spot where Saint Colmcille rested, as he supervised the transportation of Ray Cross from Muckish to Tory.
The practice of saying Mass here was discontinued, after the church was opened at Gortahork in 1786.
Nevertheless, old people, unable to attend Mass in Grotahork, continued to come to the Altar Stone (Leac na hAltóra) to pray on Sundays, until a church was opened in Falcarragh in 1882.

Tory Island/ Oileán Thoraí

Words alone, no matter how finely woven, could never give a true impression of the rugged beauty of Tory, the indominatable spirit of its people or their rich cultural inheritance. Tory must be visited if one is even to begin to understand why this remote crag, two and a half miles long and three quarters of a mile wide, holds such an attraction for its inhabitants that they, like their forebears, endure the full fury of the North Atlantic winter for pleasure and the privilage of living here in summer.

Tory's spectacular cliff scenery is complemented by a rich and varied history which is related in the islanders distinctive Gaelic. Colm Cille figures prominently in the history of this sacred island which he chose as a place of retreat and meditation for his monks. Shipwrecks, poitín smuggling and tales of violent storms have also been drawn into its folklore.

Nevertheless, it is neither the myths, the monastic ruins nor even the majestic cliffs which make the deepest impression on visitors to Tory. It is the islanders themselves, like all people who live in remote places and work hard to make a living, the islanders know how to enjoy themselves and they always make a stranger feel at home.

YARDSTOCK Festival

"Yardstock" is a creative community festival which will take place in the Yard on December 3rd. It has been organised by the Beyond Borders Youth group, who have been meeting in the Yard on a weekly basis to discuss the activities of this event. So far, the event will include local musicians and bands, food and entertainment, old-time story telling, lazer-tag, Santa Clause, The Gravity Dance Group and many other forms of entertainment for the whole community, young and old. Also, we are in the process of creating posters and promotional material. The media committee will be in charge of spreading the good word.
